...a certain shade of [green] what are _you_ waiting for?

so i'm still suffering from tonite's bout of insomnia. here's something hilarious i just noticed: bbc's webpage tracks subjects entered into its search engine form, and then displays the top 3 search requests at regular intervals throughout the day. makes for some pretty interesting combinations of terms. for example, right now the top 3 searches are:
1. daniel deronda [a novel by george eliot, and also a bbc-adapted miniseries currently showing]
2. sri lanka
3. urdu.
i can't explain to you how funny this is. and i think eddie izzard would agree.
oh, and by the way - the sun rises here at 8.20am, and sets at 3.40pm. a little more than 7 hours of daylight. fucking nuts!
my eyes red with exhaustion from a day that in all honesty should not have been that exhausting, i decided to go to bed. not that i was tired, at all, but i felt like if i didn't try to sleep i would be hopelessly stuck in a pattern of nocturnal insomnia and daytime narcolepsy. i knew i wouldn't fall asleep, though - the most annoying two bars from stevie wonder's "for once in my life" kept playing on repeat inside my head, and that was enough to keep me up for another hour or two. i flipped over, listening to the music and trying to counteract it with a constant "no no no!", and when stevie won the battle i decided to just bury my head in my pillow and make the most of a sleepless night.
and that was when i opened my eyes. one eye buried in the pillow, the other eye staring out into the room - except that in place of the room was the outline of my pillow and the duvet, and beyond that a blurry white expanse of nothing. nothing at all. i blinked. stevie died. i closed my eyes, waited a few seconds, and snapped them open. still nothing beyond the bed. and that's when i realized - i was facing the wall.
stevie started singing again.
i'm not satisfied with that. what am i missing...?
so, then, a song:
tumble out of bed and i stumble in the kitchen
pour myself a cup of ambition
yawnin', stretchin', tryin' to come to life
jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
out on the streets the traffic starts jumpin'
and folks like me, on the job, from 9 to 5...
point being - hello working college kid world, once again! i start my training period for off the wall restarant [a small quite posh restaurant on the royal mile] next week, should be interesting and hopefully good. also, they didn't seem to have too much of a problem with my nose ring, and i'm hoping they'll like the flatter one i put in next week. as for now, though, i'm off to eat a thanksgiving dinner with some americans [and quite a few other international students, who are going, i assume, just for the craic]. more later then...
so, i decided to fuck the uva-ftp-broken-pipe-sometimes-never-consistent webspace and opt for blogspot. or something like that. ah well. anyway, the point is that i'm finally online!!! so i haven't posted in 2 months to the day [ok, minus 1 day in the uk, but to the day in the us] and there's so much you've missed out on but that will have to be left alone for now. i'm going to try to update this as often as possible for the 3 people who read this regularly [dad, kat, and an interchangeable 3rd person] - i know i said i'd do that last time, and i really meant to, but then the ftp mechanism thingy went kazooey and i quit caring. i care now, though, i care now!!!
ok, so what can i tell you... my nose is finally recovering from the piercing, and the fluid bubble thingy is reabsorbing [sorry, kat, but i'm sure that's what you were going to guess anyway :)]. i went to urban body mod last week, and they told me to buy some ear care solution and use it 3 times a day, and to quit using the homemade saline solution because it was too weak to take care of the bubble. i went back this week, and they told me that the ear care solution is too harsh to use 3 times a day, and so make a homemade saline solution and use that in the middle of the day, and the ear care solution in the morning and evening. what? same guy too. and he remembered who i was as well. i don't understand it.
i got the latest eddie izzard dvd, circle, which is absolutely hilarious. what's even more hilarious, though, is the french show he did, dress to circle, which is the transition show. i was so proud of myself - i watched it in french, and understood all the jokes! self-glorification, i know, but it had to be done.
things are moving along nicely here. 2.5 more weeks of term 1, and then 10 days after that i fly my self off to st. petersburg to visit kat. well, it could be 11 days after: the airport workers have not called off the 23 dec strike yet, and so british airways may reschedule my ticket for 24 dec. not a huge issue, but i'd really feel better if things were settled beforehand and i had everything set to go. i'm sure it will all work out though. 1 essay to do before term ends and 2 by the start of next term, which isn't fun, but to tell you the truth slightly less work than i had at uva, which is nice considering i wanted my last year to be something special. i've got some recommendations lined up for whenever i feel like going to grad school [a year or two, don't worry mom/dad] but my main focus now is finding a job, either here or in the states, for those gap years [hint hint: who's got a job for me?! :)]. speaking of jobs, had an interview yesterday that went well [i feel] and hope to be hearing from them tomorrow - if not, i'll call friday and show 'em who's boss.
new feature - comments! just figured out how to use them. post your comments below [all 3 of you], i'd love to see them! and by the way, you should follow the link on the side and see my picures, if you haven't already. there should be more uploaded next week, as soon as i finish this roll of film.
last but not least, today is thanksgiving - my first not spent with family! dad, i loved your cards [especially card #2] and janet, i can't get that goddamn "happy thanksgiving doo doo doo" song out of my head! mom, i wish i was there - save me a glass of manischewitz! i will be celebrating with some american friends on friday, will try to take pictures and post them up.
